Pen pals visit Oak Crest

Published: Wednesday, June 26, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

For the past seven years, Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center residents have enjoyed participating in a pen pal program with Brooks’ Elementary School second-graders.

The program was so successful that last year that it was extended to include another second-grade classroom where children and Oak Crest residents share their love of storytelling and creative drama. Second-grade teachers Carolyn Vaughn and Kim Posega opened their classrooms each month so the children and residents could share experiences and laughter.

The year-long program culminates with a field trip to Oak Crest. This year, Oak Crest hosted more than 50 students for an afternoon of music, sharing of ideas and lots of laughter and hugs.

One participant said, “Being invited to participate in a program of this nature and knowing that the children look forward to our visits as much as we do mean the world to us.” Judging from the many smiles, it’s a sentiment shared by all who participated.

Oak Crest is located at 2944 Greenwood Acres Dr. in DeKalb. For more information about Oak Crest, contact Liz Hoppenworth at 815-756-8461.
