DeKALB – A 26-year-old DeKalb woman accused of slicing another woman's chest with a box-cutter decided against having a preliminary hearing in court Wednesday.

Lamern Craig, of the 800 block of Russell Road, faces two counts of aggravated battery for allegedly causing a cut that required 16 stitches during a fight near her home, police said.

Craig and the 22-year-old DeKalb woman were arguing in Welsh Park about 7:15 p.m. April 8. Craig got in her car, and the woman began pounding on the windows and the car. Craig got out of the car and cut the woman, who shattered a window on Craig's car with an object before going to the hospital.

If convicted of the most serious charge, Craig could be sentenced to probation or up to five years in prison. She is next due in court Aug. 20.

Prosecutors also are trying to revoke her probation in a 2011 case in which she pulled her then 5-year-old son across a busy street as police were searching for her.

She had stolen clothing from Kohl's and was hiding behind a electrical box at the corner of North Seventh Street and Sycamore Road, authorities said.

When the squad car turned around, the woman reportedly ran across a heavily traveled road, pulling the child behind her, authorities said. The officer activated the lights and siren in the squad car, then exited the vehicle and chased Craig when she did not respond to a command to stop.

She was sentenced to two years of probation in November after being convicted of retail theft, endangering the life of a child and resisting a police officer.
