Casey's to open this month in Sycamore
SYCAMORE – A new Casey’s General Store on Sycamore’s north side has a city-issued liquor license and is expected to open Oct. 17.
Sycamore officials approved a Class F liquor license for the store at 105 Plank Road. It will offer an expanded coffee bar, beer and made-to-order submarine sandwich operation.
The store’s liquor license allows it to sell beer and wine for consumption off the store’s premises. Casey’s General Stores Inc., headquartered in Ankeny, Iowa, expects to have beer available for sale Oct. 17, said Brian Johnson, vice president of finance for the company.
Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said the new store should offer residents in the nearby neighborhoods a needed gas station option.
“We realize that’s the only place to buy gas and food items north of the city – until people get to Genoa or Burlington – so we think they will do very well,” he said.
Mundy, who as mayor is also the city’s liquor commissioner, said the store’s liquor license is not unlike those issued at similar stores in the city. The stores are usually 1,000 square feet and no more than 25 percent of the retail space can be dedicated to the sale of alcohol.
Mundy said he and city attorney Kevin Buick conducted the hearing Sept. 17 to approve the license.
About 200 people applied to work at the new store – only 30 were hired, but they are all from Sycamore, Mundy said.
Johnson said he believes the store will do well in Sycamore, especially the pizza and doughnut sales.
Casey’s has 1,749 stores in 14 states, Johnson said. Illinois has the second-highest number of stores with 409 locations. The new stores, such as the one in Sycamore, are larger and more expensive to build, he said.
“We don’t put them there unless they are going to be a strong performer,” he said.
