DeKALB – The DeKalb Police Department arrested five people on drunken driving charges during the holidays as part of the state’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” program.

From Dec. 20 to Jan. 5, DeKalb police also issued 17 seat belt citations, four violations for driving with a suspended license and three drug arrests.

The program was successful in spite of weather issues, said DeKalb police Lt. James McDougall.

The crackdown was funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation, according to a DeKalb police news release.

The program will continue throughout the year during holidays and on special occasions. The next one will be during Super Bowl weekend, McDougall said. Police will target occupant protection and drunken drivers, McDougall said.
