DeKalb band concert takes a trip to outer space

Published: Saturday, July 5, 2014 5:30 a.m. CDT

The DeKalb Municipal Band’s summer concert series resumes at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Dee Palmer Band Shell at Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road. Soprano Terri Crain Goodman will be the featured vocalist at this concert featuring “music of the galaxy” and a special stargazing event through high-powered telescopes.

Goodman is a Sycamore native and graduate of Sycamore High School and Northern Illinois University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in music and music education. She has taught choir and general music in the Mount Morris, Oregon and Sycamore school districts. An accomplished pianist, she also has served as a private voice teacher, musical theater camp instructor and accompanist.

Goodman has directed and held starring roles in a number of plays and musicals. She has appeared most recently with Stage Coach Players in productions of “Annie” and “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and can be seen in their upcoming production of “Urinetown, the Musical” in September. Goodman will be accompanied by the band on “Matchmaker” from “Fiddler on the Roof,” Henry Mancini’s “Moon River,” and the well-known “Fly Me to the Moon,” popularized by Frank Sinatra.

Music of the galaxy will include soundtracks from“Star Trek,” “Back to the Future,” “The Rocketeer,” “Planes,” “Star Wars,” “Captain America,” and Sousa’s “The Transit of Venus,” which, in 2004,  was rediscovered by an employee at the Library of Congress.

At the end of the band music, audience members are invited to observe the night sky. NIU STEM Outreach will have two telescopes set up behind the band shell and will guide visitors as they view the stars.

Admission is free. Bench seating is available, or bring your own lawn chairs or blankets. DeKalb Municipal Band concerts are sponsored by the city of DeKalb and the DeKalb Park District.
